SUPER DUPLEX FROM SPECIAL PIPING MATERIAL (SPM)
Super Duplex is a stainless steel mainly used in oil and gas applications. Super Duplex alloys are characterised by a high chromium and molybdenum content. This gives it a high tensile strength which allows it to have a better resistance to corrosion cracking and erosion, as well as having a high thermal conductivity and a low thermal expansion than conventional austenitic stainless steels. The high chromium and molybdenum content also gives Super Duplex a high resistance to acids that could cause pitting and crevice corrosion.
The unique properties of Super Duplex mean that it is in high demand for a wide range of scenarios such as pipes in the oil and gas industry, structural and mechanical components, utility and industrial systems, high strength wiring solutions, cargo vessels and heat exchangers. It is well-suited for use in many offshore and onshore applications.

DUPLEX FROM SPECIAL PIPING MATERIAL (SPM)
Duplex Stainless Steel appeared in the marketplace due to the need to combat the shortcomings of austenitic and ferritic steels. It was found that a mixture of these two materials resulted in higher strength, reduced weight, good weldability and increased resistance to stress corrosion cracking.
Unlike similar steels, duplex also displays an improved resistance to localised corrosion, particularly pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Due to its ferritic qualities, duplex steel also shows very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking when compared to standard austenitics. In some cases, the strength of duplex steel can be up to double that of the most commonly used grades of stainless steel.
Another benefit of duplex steels is that because it has a lower nickel and molybdenum content than other austenitic stainless steels, it can prove to be a more cost effective option due to its lower alloy content.
These benefits clearly show why Duplex steels have become popular in applications such as pressure vessels, cooling pipes and storage tanks.
Duplex becomes brittle at extreme temperatures so its use is normally restricted to a maximum temperature of 300 degrees. Duplex also shows signs of embrittlement at –50 degrees.

STAINLESS STEELS FROM SPECIAL PIPING MATERIAL (SPM)
There are a number of different types of stainless steels, which are characterised according to their crystalline structure. For example, when nickel is added, the austenite structure is stabilised, making steel that is both non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. Likewise, the addition of carbon makes stainless steels much stronger.
Austenitic stainless steels count for over 70% of all stainless steels that are produced. They contain enough nickel or manganese to retain their structure at any temperatures between their freezing and melting points.
Super austenitic steel has a higher nickel content ensuring a greater resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. The addition of nitrogen and molybdenum also ensures a greater resistance to chloride-pitting and crevice-corrosion. Low carbon versions of super austenitic steel avoid corrosion problems caused by welding. Because of the increased alloys, super austenitic steels are more expensive than austenitic steels.
Ferritic stainless steels have a greater resistance to corrosion but are less durable than austenitic steels.
Duplex stainless steels have an equal mixture of austenite and ferrite phases. Due to its ferritic qualities, duplex steel also shows very good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking when compared to standard austenitic steels.
